S4S stands for “surfaced on 4 sides”. Our S4S is produced in a moulder with all surface faces and edges very smooth.
Cabinet Facing (aka Face Frame) is typically surfaced S4S to 13/16" from 4/4 lumber to actual width.
Dimensional lumber is commonly S4S and labeled according to nominal size, or the size of the rough board before it was planed smooth. For example, 1x6 is actually 3/4x5-1/2. Dimensional hardwood lumber or S4S lumber is ready to be made into cabinets, furniture or trim.
Red Alder is stocked in two different grades: Premium Frame and Superior.
Superior Alder is the top grade in Alder. It's primarily used for moldings and applications where clear faced cuttings are required.
Alder, when freshly cut, is very pale, almost white in color. As it begins to oxidize, the color grows deeper and takes on golden and red tones. Heartwood occurs only in trees of advanced age. The boundary between Alder sapwood and heartwood is virtually invisible. The wood has a fine, uniform textured with a straight, yet subdued grain.
Alder is a medium-density wood with low shock resistance and medium crushing strength. It is easily worked with both hand and machine tools and turns well. It has very good nailing and gluing properties. It is highly valued for upholstery framing, due to its stability and excellent tack- holding qualities. It stains and polishes well, producing a finish that blends beautifully with Walnut, Mahogany, or Cherry. The inconspicuous grain also makes Alder an excellent choice for painting.
Superior Grade Rule Summary: 83-1/3% Clear 1 Face and at least 66-2/3% on the back.
Minimum clear-cutting size: 3" x 6' or 4" x 3' *Pin Knots are not a defect in Alder.
