Mappa burl is actually burl wood of a European poplar. This highly decorative veneer is particularly contrasty—its light brown heartwood is peppered by an unusual darker, bark-like pattern of tight clusters. This burl is stunning—an extraordinary and unexpected choice for furniture, cabinetry, and architectural applications.

Mappa burl veneers require a grain filler to level-out the voids in the burl pockets. These voids are not imperfections but instead are simply the way nature makes this type of burl. Grain filling is often done with epoxy mixed with wood dust. Once the epoxy dries, careful sanding is required.

Black Poplar burl, known as Mappa Burl, is highly decorative and is used for drum shells and other fine veneered applications.
