Ponderosa Pine (PP) is one of North America’s most abundant species. It is often milled and sold in combination with other similar Western Pine species (Sugar Pine, Lodgepole Pine, White Pine’s, Engelmann Spruce and other western white softwoods).
The wide pale-yellow sapwood is soft, non-resinous and even-textured. The heavier heartwood is deep yellow to reddish brown and is resinous. It can be knotty, with resin ducts that show as the dark fine lines on the surfaces of a board. It is not a durable wood.
PP has little heart wood and is mainly sapwood, although in lower grades the heartwood becomes more common. This species of lumber is most often used for interior applications, such as shelving and paneling.
Characteristics may include: black knots, loose knots or knot holes, large, edge knots which might chip out, heavy blue stain, heavy shake, and massed pitch.
