ALDER, KNOTTY C4 - PLAIN SLICED

1/4" - 4'X8' - Veneer Core

C Grade/Rustic: Our rustic grade (C) provides the most concentrated level of natural characteristics.

Where it Grows
It grows principally in the Pacific Northwest.  Average height is 90 feet and the tree matures in 25 to 40 years, but will begin to deteriorate by 60 to 80 years of age.  Alder grows well on burned over lands and thrives in areas that have been ravaged by fire, earthquakes or logging.

General Description
Red Alder, a relative of birch, is almost white when freshly cut but quickly changes on exposure to air to light brown with a yellow or reddish tinge. Heartwood is formed only in trees of advanced age and there is no visible boundary between sap and heartwood. The wood is fairly straight grained with a uniform texture. A Grade provides the cleanest and most uniform combination of natural characteristics and color with a fine, light grain pattern and consistent color. Alder has a fresh look and great workability making it a versatile choice for your paneling, furniture and cabinet needs. Featuring uniform colors in hues ranging from honey to pale brown, these panels are easy to both match and finish, accepting an array of finishes from clear to dark cherry.

Working Properties
Red Alder machines well and is excellent for turning. It nails, screws and glues well, and can be sanded, painted, or stained to a good finish.

Main Uses
Its main uses are in furniture, cabinets, doors, shutters, mouldings, panel stock, turnings, carvings and kitchen utensils.

Plank Matching is a deliberate random mismatch designed to visually redistribute prominent natural characteristics in some species.

Plain Slicing (also known as Plain Sawn or Flat Cut) a log produces thin veneers that are no wider than the log and have a pronounced repeating grain pattern.  These pieces must be combined to make a plywood face by "matching" the pieces as desired.
